The short version
Chiang Mai's Old City is laid out as a near-perfect square, roughly 1.5 km on each side, bordered by a moat and, in sections, the remains of the original brick city wall. Five main gates punctuate the walls, of which Tha Phae Gate on the east side is by far the most iconic and photographed, opening onto Tha Phae Road toward the river.
What's inside the walls
Dozens of temples are packed inside this relatively small area, including Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, alongside a dense mix of guesthouses, cafés, massage shops and small restaurants down almost every soi. It's genuinely walkable — most of the Old City's highlights are within a 20-minute walk of each other.
Sunday Walking Street
Every Sunday evening, the main road running east–west through the Old City closes to traffic and fills with market stalls, stretching from Tha Phae Gate deep into the old town. It's one of the best single evenings to experience the Old City at its most lively.
Getting around
Walking is realistic for most of the Old City given its compact, square layout. Songthaews and ride-hailing apps cover the moat roads and trips further out — to Nimman, the airport, or up to Doi Suthep.
