What it is

Every Sunday evening, Ratchadamnoen Road — the main east–west street running through the Old City from Tha Phae Gate — closes to traffic and fills with market stalls stretching deep into the old town, with side streets and temple courtyards along the route also filling with vendors and food stalls.

What to expect

Compared to the nightly Night Bazaar, the Walking Street has a stronger local, handmade-crafts feel — textiles, artwork, jewellery and a genuinely wide spread of street food, much of it set up inside the courtyards of the temples that line the route. It draws a large crowd, both visitors and locals, so patience with the pace of foot traffic is part of the experience.

Tips for making the most of it

  • Start from Tha Phae Gate and work your way west — the crowd generally flows in that direction.
  • Duck into the temple courtyards along the route; several set up their own food and craft stalls away from the main crush of the street.
  • Go hungry — it's one of the best single evenings in the city for grazing your way through several different food stalls.
  • Cash is the easiest way to pay at almost every stall.
